What Is Cycle Time? Injection Molding Explained

Cycle time is the full molding loop, and cooling usually owns the largest share.

Glossary

Cycle time is the clock that sets piece price

Every second in the mold is resin, energy, and machine rent rolled into unit cost.

Cycle time spans mold close, fill, pack, hold, cooling, open, and eject. Cooling usually dominates on thermoplastic parts with moderate wall sections.

Cosmetic textures and thick bosses extend cooling because heat must leave the part before ejection.

Buyers asking for cycle time on day one of an RFQ should expect qualified estimates after tooling and resin are fixed.

Levers

Cooling dominated cycles versus cosmetic add ons

Not every design change moves cycle equally.

Changes that rarely move cycle much

  • Minor rib fillet tweaks within the same wall stack
  • Secondary text on non cosmetic faces
  • Label recess depth within existing wall

Changes that move cycle and cost

  • Thick sections without coring
  • High gloss cosmetic faces that demand longer stable cooling
  • Large projected area parts that need stronger vent and pack tuning

Production

Why NetProto ties cycle to the steel tool you keep

One hardened tool means cycle improvements compound on every repeat order.

  • Process development stays on the same mold you qualified.
  • Repeat orders do not restart tooling amortization on a throwaway mold.
  • Family layouts trade cycle complexity against tooling capital in one conversation.

FAQ

Cycle time questions

Will NetProto guarantee cycle time in the quote PDF?

Production cycle targets are discussed on qualified programs after tooling scope is defined.

Does faster cycle always mean lower piece price?

Usually, but only if quality, scrap, and secondary operations stay stable.

Can wall thickness alone set cycle?

Wall thickness drives cooling need, but gate, material, and ejection matter too.
