Glossary

What Is a Mold Vent? Injection Molding Explained

Vents are shallow paths that let air out so plastic can reach the end of fill.

Glossary

Vents let trapped air escape as the cavity fills

Without vent paths, air compresses and burns, or plastic never reaches the end of fill.

Vent lands are shallow channels at the parting line or insert shutoffs that let gas exit without flashing plastic.

Deep ribs and pocketed cores trap air that cannot reach the parting line without engineered vent pins or parting splits.

Burn marks at the last fill region often mean venting or fill rate, not only overheated material.

How vent shows up on real programs

Library photos illustrate molding and tooling context for this term.

  • Use the term in RFQs with geometry and material context, not in isolation.
  • Link to the design guide when the term affects steel or part design.
  • Upload CAD when the term changes tooling scope or piece price.

Symptoms

Vent related defects versus other causes

Use location on the part to narrow the list before changing steel.

Patterns that suggest venting

  • Burn at the last region to fill or end of rib
  • Short fill at the same pocket every shot
  • Sizzle or smoke at parting line on startup

Patterns that suggest other levers

  • Flash everywhere on the parting line may be clamp or shutoff wear
  • Warp after demold points to cooling or ejection stress
  • Cloudiness may trace to moisture in hygroscopic resin

CAD

Vent friendly geometry habits

These reduce trapped air surprises at T1.

  • Avoid blind pockets with no parting line escape path

  • Call out foam or seal areas that cannot tolerate vent flash

  • Note cosmetic faces where vent witness must stay hidden

  • Mark deep ribs that need vent pins in tooling notes

FAQ

Vent questions

Are vents visible on the finished part?

Vent flash can leave a faint witness on parting lines if process or maintenance drifts.

Can vents be added after first samples?

Sometimes via vent pins or parting adjustments, but prevention in DFM is cheaper.

Do soft elastomers need different vent thinking?

Low viscosity materials flash vents faster, so shutoff and vent depth need tighter control.
